Natalie by Keana Aguila Labra explores a journey of grief, longing, reminiscence, regret. The aftermath of a loved one’s departure leaves the narrator reflecting on the vulnerable collection of memories they have left of them. The title poem begins with a metaphor to time: “when I close my eyes, the years collapse…fragile flower wilted in the pages..”, a reoccurring motif that tightly weaves the narrative together. Time serves as an anchor to travel in between dream and reality, a mechanism to cope: “…with my newfound skills…white to tongue, lip to lip, eyelid to bottom…I return to you…”, that beautifully transitions over to the concluding poem The Space Between You and I.
This poem holds resilience: “my love transcends space & time…you never left”. A fierce, powerful notion of love and belief, it brings the piece to a heartfelt close: “we share lunch before I take you home”. A final reminiscence, capturing a peaceful, tranquil moment the narrator once had with their loved one. Natalie is written with a honest, meditative flow, carrying memories through music, scents, and sounds – recreating her entire right in front of reader’s eyes.
